Prepare
Each initial audition involves two short (30-60 seconds) performances:
1) Monologue
-
A speech delivered by a single character
2) Song
-
Students who are not comfortable singing a cappella (without music) will need an instrumental or karaoke track to sing along to during the audition.

These pieces are performed in 10-minute time slots for the directors. We always suggest choosing pieces that reflect the type of role they would like. We suggest avoiding songs or monologues from the show they are auditioning for. The directors will see enough of the show’s content in callbacks.
Most importantly, choose something that your student feels comfortable performing! They will always make bigger choices and perform their best when they are comfortable and confident with the content.

Belong
Everyone who auditions for a Bright Lights production will be cast.

Callbacks are the second part of the audition process and help the directors place students in the right role for them. Most of the time, the full cast will be called for a dance callback. They will learn a combination and perform it for the choreographer in groups.

Some students might be called back for specific roles. During this time, students may be asked to sing a song from the show or cold-read a scene with other students. If the directors ask them to prepare content ahead of time, they will likely not get to present all of the songs/scenes they prepare. The goal is to make big choices and have fun showing the directors all they can do!

Casting Guidelines
Casting and communicating the cast of a production or camp is a difficult and complex task. Directors audition a cast that may contain a variety of talents, role preferences, ages, genders, and abilities. At Bright Lights, we strive to cast according to what is best for the students while considering the quality of production desired for excellent storytelling and gospel communication. We strive to cast fairly, knowing that education is our driving force behind all productions and camps.
In order to ensure that casting is practiced thoughtfully and without bias, all Bright Lights directors are expected to follow the guidelines below.
